How do we juggle our responsibilities to excel at work, pursue our studies, and still enjoy life?
My own journey wasn’t easy. I often had to sacrifice annual leave to prepare for exams or complete assignments, spending many nights and weekends in classes. Also spent some late nights having supper with my fellow classmates.
What worked for me may not work for everyone; we all have different responsibilities and are at various stages in life.
I recently came across an inspiring article by Peh Xueli, a senior staff nurse at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, who shares her journey of lifelong learning. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with me:
Passion-Driven Choices: Peh chose nursing as a way to fulfill her calling to help others, which fueled her motivation to pursue further education later in life.
Adaptability: She pivoted into medical sales when she needed to take a break from nursing due to health reasons. She was able to leverage her nursing background to excel in the new role. Her practical approach allowed her to keep going while recovering.
Self-Awareness: She recognised that her passion lay in nursing, not in sales. This self-awareness guided her back to her true calling.
Resilience: Once fully recovered and in a different life stage, she returned to nursing and didn’t give up on her calling.
Determination in Learning: Peh sought out a degree programme that offered the flexibility she needed to balance work and study, demonstrating her determination to succeed.
Her story is a testament to being focused, flexible, and determined while also having a strong support system.
It’s never too late to pursue your passions and enhance your skills. Here's the link to the article.
