Many of my clients ask what the difference is between counselling, therapy and coaching. In this article, I will list the key differences between them to help you choose the right professional for your needs.
Coaching: Your Future Self
Coaches focus on the future, empowering you to unlock your potential and achieve peak performance. They ask powerful questions to stimulate self-awareness and inspire action. They act as a questioner and accountability partner.
Future-Focused: Coaches help clients set and achieve future goals.
Self-Discovery: Coaches empower clients to find their own solutions.
Accountability: Coaches hold clients accountable for their commitments.
Counselling: A Bridge to Emotional Well-being
Counsellors focus on your emotional well-being, providing a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings. They act as a listener, empathetic guide, problem solver and support to help you develop coping skills and improve your mental health.
Emotional Well-being: Counsellors help clients understand and manage their emotions.
Problem-Solving: Counsellors assist clients in identifying and addressing problems.
Personal Growth: Counsellors support clients in developing coping skills and self-awareness.
Therapy: Healing the Past, Empowering the Future
Therapists delve deep into your past to uncover the root causes of your present-day struggles. They often use a reflective inquiry approach to help you process trauma, heal emotional wounds, and develop healthier patterns of thinking and behaving.
Past-Focused: Therapists often delve into past experiences to address present issues.
Healing: Therapists help clients work through emotional and psychological challenges.
Clinical Expertise: Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.
Counselling and therapy ask clients questions just like coaches. The difference is in the focus toward the problem versus the future. Perhaps this diagram will help you understand the difference more clearly.

Some of my clients engage both a coach like myself as well as a counsellor or therapist concurrently. Other clients of mine engage both a mentor and a coach to attain their goals.
Choosing the Right Professional
The right professional for you is one who aligns with your specific needs and goals. Use the table above to not only choose the professional you need but also to prepare yourself for the sessions. You may want to talk to a few potential professionals to find what best suits you. When you do meet with them, be open and honest about your concerns and expectations. Finally, trust the process.
